The Turquoise Museum of Albuquerque
Albuquerque, United States
The Turquoise Museum (aka Turquoise Castle), located at 400 2nd Street SW, Albuquerque, invites visitors into an 8,500-square-foot space devoted entirely to the world’s most iconic blue-green gemstone. The building itself resembles a neo-gothic castle, setting a dramatic stage for the displays within.
Inside, you’ll explore exhibits that cover turquoise’s formation and mineralogy, the cultural histories of its use in jewelry across civilizations, lapidary techniques, and modern trade practices. You’ll see raw specimens from mines around the globe, finely crafted jewelry pieces, interactive displays, and even demonstrations (depending on schedule) of cutting, polishing, and stone setting. A highlight is the “George Washington Stone,” a striking large turquoise specimen.
Because entry is via timed tickets, visitors move through in controlled groups to preserve the experience. Most tours are self-guided, though staff are available to answer questions. The museum encourages a pace that allows lingering in favorite rooms, reading interpretive panels or listening via QR codes.
